Profile | History | Training
CTC was first established in 1989, in Adelaide South Australia.
CTC has enjoyed considerable growth and is recognised as one of the largest privately
owned training and placement service of Direct Care Workers, Nurse Assistants,
Aged Care Workers, Personal Servicing Assistants and Enrolled Nurses in
South Australia.
In 1989 CTC conducted labour market research in South Australia in the
Health Care Industry. Results highlighted an urgent need for trained Entry
Level Care Workers particularly in the area of caring for people with a
physical and/or intellectual disability.
After extensive consultation with industry representatives, including employers,
unions and most importantly the consumers of care, a short course was developed
to train people working, or desiring to work in the provision of Direct
Care.
CTC’s first Care Attendant course was facilitated in South Australia
in July 1989 and marked the beginning of Care Attendant Courses to be conducted
in South Australia.
The curriculum for our first course was developed in conjunction with Minda
Incorporated, a large institution providing care for people with an intellectual
disability and some with multiple disabilities. The course was of four weeks
duration and covered Attitudes & Values, Senior First Aid, Lifting &
Transferring and Care Giving Practices. All successful Graduates were subsequently
employed at Minda Incorporated.
Due to the success of the first course, interest was attracted from the
Paraplegic & Quadriplegic Association of South Australia Inc (PQA),
and subsequently, in four more courses being delivered specifically for
PQA. The course content was modified to include the care needs required
for people with physical disabilities.
The course rapidly became recognised throughout the Health Care Industry
as providing quality ‘hands-on’ practical training. This resulted
in a broad range of employers contacting CTC requesting the inclusion of
additional modules to meet the needs specific to their client group. Mental
Illness, Head Injuries, Diabetes and some aged related conditions were included
in the course. The inclusion of the additional modules provided a wider
range of employment opportunities for Graduates.
Since 1990 the CTC Care Attendant course expanded from a four week
program to a ten week program and included 60 hours of ‘on-the-job’
work placement. In 1991 the course was first accredited and registered on
the South Australia State Register.
During 1991/2 continued research and development suggested strongly that
further Aged Care modules be incorporated in the 240 hour course. Again,
CTC sought industry consultation from Employers, Educators, Consumers, Allied
Health Professionals and Care Workers and the additional Aged Care modules
were developed.
CTC has engendered significant industry support since 1989.
Industry contribution continued to develop the training program to create
a unique course which encompassed all facets of training for Direct Care
Workers in Aged Care, Community and Home Based care providing care for the
frail aged, people with an intellectual, physical, or mental disability,
the brain injured and post operative patients.
In 1996 CTC’s Certificate III Health Services (Direct Care Worker)
course was Nationally Accredited.
Today CTC enjoys the close support from the Health Care
Industry in the Home Based, Community and Aged Care sectors in South Australia
and CTC is now a valuable recruiting source for employers. Successful Graduates
are in high demand by Aged Care Facilities, (Nursing Homes & Hostels),
Community Health Centres, Hospitals and Home Based Care Providers.
In the Year 2000 the course was mapped against the National Training Package
and following a further review in 2004 CTC now offers qualifications at
Certificate III and IV levels in both Community Services (Aged Care) and
(Disability Care) and Certificate III in Community Services (Home &
Community Care). Courses are offered both full and part time and can be
conducted in CTC’s well equipped training rooms, or by negotiation,
can be delivered at the work place.
CTC has access to several distance learning packages both text and interactive
CD-ROM.
CTC’s courses are recognised by:
Industry and Employers
Australian National Training Authority
Accreditation Recognition Council
Department Education, Children’s Services and Training
Department of Employment Education Training and Youth Affairs (Commonwealth)
Nurses Board of South Australia
Australian Nursing Federation
In South Australia, CTC has been proactive in liaising with all sectors
of the Health Care Industry. This pro-activity has led to a wide acceptance
and recognition of the quality training
CTC has an excellent reputation with the Government of South Australia
and during 1998 and 1999 highlighted the need for Entry Level Health Care
Worker training to the Minister for Education, Children’s Services
and Training, The Honourable Malcolm Buckby. This resulted in CTC being
appointed as a Preferred Training Provider for the South Australian Government.
As a preferred training provider CTC facilitates specific tailor made courses
to up-skill current staff and newly appointed staff, courses to prepare
them for tasks particular to that organisation.
CTC is also commissioned by various organisations to update existing workers’
skills in a variety of specific modules, eg. Manual Handling, Care Giving
Practices, Dementia etc.
CTC is recognised to deliver qualifications under “USER CHOICE”
in South Australia for the delivery of Traineeships on behalf of the Federal
Government.
